How the math works
No tricks: four calculations.
- Distance for the week: the days times the distance per day.
- Variable part: the energy per mile, as in the fuel and charging calculator.
- Fixed part: the week’s fixed costs divided by the distance for the week. Per month, times 12 divided by 52; per year, divided by 52.
- Full cost: the variable part plus the fixed part.
Fixed costs are split over your work miles only. If you also drive the car for yourself, the number comes out higher.
